APPLICATION PACKET for Spanish Teaching Major

Requirements for the BA degree in Spanish Teaching:

(Effective Fall Semester 2004)

  1. A total of 120 hours, of which at least 30 hours are to be taken in residence.

    • Spanish 377     Spanish Teaching Procedures 1  3.0 (prerequisites: ScEd 276R; Span 321, 326, and 345 or 355)
    • Spanish 378     Spanish Teaching Procedures 2  3.0 (prerequisite: Span 377)
    • Spanish 380     Practicum in Spanish Teaching 1.0 (to be taken simultaneously with Span 378)
    • Spanish 441     Survey of Spanish Literature 3.0 (prerequisite: Span 339)
    • Spanish 451     Survey of Hispanic-American Literature 3.0 (prerequisite: Span 339)
    • (Note: Spanish 377, 378, and 380 are only offered during Fall and Winter semesters; they are not offered during Spring or Summer.  Please plan accordingly.)

  7. Foreign Residency Requirement (see University Catalog).


  8. Oral Proficiency - An oral proficiency exam is required for all majors with an expected score of at least Advanced Low. To take this exam, students must enroll in Spanish 491.


  9. No "D" credit is accepted toward the major.


  10. In order to declare any major in Spanish, undergraduate students must take an Advisement Test. This does not determine whether you can declare the major, but rather it helps the Department advise you concerning your level of Spanish. This test has been temporarily suspended until further notice.

Sigma Delta Pi

Spanish majors and minors should consider joining BYU's chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Spanish Honor Society. Those students who have completed 60 hours of college credit, 18 hours of college Spanish (special credit exam hours may be counted), and either Spanish 339 or 345 (or 355), and who have a university GPA of at least 3.0 are eligible to join. See department secretary for information regarding the initiation ceremonies held each Fall and Winter semester.
