Most students with previous experience in Spanish and Portuguese are eligible to take an exam that will cover Port. 101, 102, 201, 211R and 212R or Span. 105, 106, 206, 111R and 112R. In order to take this exam students must be enrolled in a Spanish or Portuguese class. Most foreign-serving returned missionaries take Port. 315 or Span. 321. Students with good high-school experience and state-side Spanish-speaking missions generally take 205 or 206 and will test out of 105, 106, for eight total credits. However, some state-side missionaries may also test out of 111R and 112R for 12 total credits. The placement exam must be taken in order to determine which class this group of students should enroll in (1131 JFSB). Native speakers of Spanish and Portuguese cannot take the 16-credit exam. They are able to take an exam in English. For information on the English course and English exam, please contact the department.
The 16-credit exam must be taken during the first Spanish or Portuguese class after the mission experience. If a student misses the scheduled time for the exam he/she will have to take the paper-and-pencil exam.
If a student has taken an exam at another university or through our Off-Campus Test Office, or AP credit, and the credits were transferred to BYU he/she will not be allowed to take the 16-credit exam.
Forms will be distributed by your instructor of Span/Port. 315 and 321. All other students will pick them up from the Department office, 3190 JFSB. They will be available starting 15 May. Students must pay the non-refundable fee of $20.00 in the Cashier's Office, D-155 ASB, then take the form to 3190 JFSB and enter his/her name onto the computer by Friday, 29 May.
On Monday, 1 June, 12:00 noon, students can begin to sign up for the exam periods in the Testing Lab B-153 JFSB. Please encourage students to sign up early, as the last exam times go quickly. Because of the large number of students requesting this exam it will be administered according to the class period that the student is attending.
There will be no exceptions. It is the student's responsibility to schedule a time from among the days indicated for your class. Failure to follow the procedure or to take the exam on the days scheduled for the class disqualifies the student from taking the exam on the computer. Students will then have to take a paper-and-pencil version of the exam scheduled through the department.
