Bachelor of Arts Program

  1. A total of 120 hours, of which at least 30 are to be taken in residence.

    A. Major core classes in Portuguese - 18 hours
    • Portuguese 321 3rd Year Grammar and Composition
    • Portuguese 322 3rd Year Grammar and Composition 3.0
    • Portuguese 339 Introduction to Portuguese & Brazilian Literature 3.0
    • Portuguese 345 or 355 Portuguese Civilization / Brazilian Civilization 3.0
    • Portuguese 441 Survey of Portuguese Literature 3.0
    • Portuguese 451 Survey of Brazilian Literature 3.0


    B. Portuguese elective classes - 12 hours
    • Portuguese 311*, 326, 329, 345, 355, 395R, 439R, 442, 449R, 452, 453, 459R, 461,480R (3 credits), 490, 520, 521, 522, 529R, 599R. Portuguese 490 is highly recommended for those who wish to pursue a graduate degree.
      *Portuguese-speaking missionaries and natives may not count Port. 311 as part of the 30 hours.
  4. Minor or Option II requirement:
    A. Any minor in the university catalog is accepted, or a double major, that meets the individual needs of the student.
    B. Any student not wishing to get a formal minor may complete at least 15 hours from among the following related fields: a second modern language (upper-division courses only), Latin, Greek, English (beyond General Education requirement), Linguistics, Classical Civilization, Latin American History or Geography, Iberian History or Geography, Humanities, Archaeology of Portugal/Spain or Latin America, Comparative Literature, or other areas approved by the department chairman.
  5. Oral Proficiency - There will be an oral proficiency evaluation required for all majors. To take evaluation, students must enroll in Portuguese 491.
  6. No "D" credit will be accepted.
