Guidelines for Teaching Assistants
Prerequisites for Teaching Assistantships:
- Successful completion of Spanish 326 (Spanish Phonetics and Pronunciation).
- Successful completion of Spanish 477 (Spanish Language Teaching Procedures I).
-
Submission of a video taped presentation of a mini-lesson in Spanish.
-
Successful completion of the August pre-school workshop.
Note: Graduate students coming from other universities must submit the videotape, but may have an equivalent
teaching methods course previously taken that will fill the Spanish 477 requirement. Exceptions to this rule require the approval of the Pedagogy Section. These students may take Spanish 326 concurrently.
General Procedures:
- The 200 level courses will normally be reserved for students in
their second year of graduate study.
- All Spanish graduate students will be assigned to teaching positions
before any courses are assigned to undergraduates. On occasion the
Teaching Assistant may be assigned to teach an evening class as part
of his/her regular load, with the commensurate Evening School pay
scale and pay periods.
- Re-appointment will be contingent upon quality of teaching and classroom
performance, as well as maintaining an average 3.0 GPA in course work.
- Teaching Assistantships for spring and summer terms are available
on a limited basis to advanced graduate teaching assistants.
- Graduate students will be granted no more than five (5) semesters
of teaching in the department, contingent upon quality of teaching
and classroom performance.
- Undergraduate students will be granted no more than two (2) semesters
of teaching in the department--normally their senior year, with the
possibility of an additional semester, contingent upon quality of
teaching and classroom performance.
- All students holding Teaching Assistantships for fall and winter
semesters must make separate application for spring and/or summer
terms.
