HOUSING
In order to provide maximum exposure to Spanish language and culture, students will be housed with local families carefully selected by the university. All families have experience hosting students from other cultures and are located in Alcalá de Henares, a university town outside Madrid.

COST
$9,500–9,950
Includes LDS, undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non-LDS students), housing, meals with host family, a transportation pass to trains, buses and subway, admissions, excursions, hotels with continental breakfast while away from Alcalá, and international health insurance.
NOT INCLUDED
Airfare, meals on excursions, and personal expenses.
PREPARATION
Students must have completed SPAN 205 and 206 by the end of summer term 2017 or demonstrate equivalent proficiency.
All students who are accepted into the program are required to participate in an international, cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201, 1 credit hour). This evening course will be held during the second block of winter semester 2017. Part-time and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional $276 tuition fee for enrolling in the prep class.
Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.
FUNDING SOURCES
Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.
Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application, and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB), will be considered for a study abroad scholarship and may be considered for other scholarships. They must indicate on their original online application that they want to be considered for financial aid.
Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).
The College of Humanities will offer program discounts of up to $3,000, based on financial need, to majors within the college.

FACULTY
Rob Martinsen is the faculty director of the program and is a professor of Spanish pedagogy in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Martinsen will be accompanied by his wife Jami, a former elementary school teacher, and their four children, Olivia (7), Brooklyn (5), Benjamin (3), and William (1).

SCHEDULE AND TIME COMMITMENT
Students should plan to be in Madrid from 1 September to 18 November and refrain from scheduling later arrivals or early departures. Travel during the program may include such cities as Barcelona, Leon, Avila, Segovia, Burgos, Salamanca, Toledo, Granada, Córdoba, and Seville.
