HOUSING
Students will live in dormitory-style housing arranged by the Study in Portugal Network. The housing facility is centrally located close to downtown Lisbon in the vibrant neighborhood of Chiado, within walking distance of museums, churches, the Lisbon port, and metro and bus services.
COURSES
Students must register for 6 credits from the following classes. Students may take their courses in English or in Portuguese.
IHUM 202 Humanities and Western Civilization (3 credit hours)
PORT 346R Symbols of Portuguese Culture (3 credit hours)
PORT 395R/EUROP 336R Portuguese Culture and European History and Politics (1–3 credit hours)
COST
$4,900–5,400
Includes LDS undergraduate tuition (increased cost for non-LDS and graduate students), instruction materials, housing, metro and bus pass, excursions, some admissions and meals, and international health coverage.
Not Included: airfare, some meals, and personal expenses
PREPARATION
All students accepted into the program are expected to register for a 1 credit hour, pre-departure preparation class, IAS 201R, which will run during the second block of winter semester 2017.
Part-time BYU students and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee of approximately $276.
Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.
FUNDING SOURCES
Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.
Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application, and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB), will be considered for a study abroad scholarship and may be considered for other scholarships.
Students must indicate on their original online application that they want to be considered for financial aid.
Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

FACULTY
The program will be directed by Rex Nielson, a professor of Portuguese and Spanish at Brigham Young University. Although Nielson specializes in Brazilian literature, he also conducts research on Portuguese literature and culture and has traveled to Portugal several times. He will be joined by his wife Natalie, a specialist in art history who teaches in the department of Comparative Arts and Letters at BYU. She will be the instructor of IHUM 202. They will be accompanied by their five adorable children.
SCHEDULE AND TIME COMMITMENT
Students should plan to be in Lisbon from 1 May to 16 June and refrain from scheduling late arrivals or early departures.
