Spain Study Abroad-Spring 2017

DATES

3 May–20 June 2017

HOUSING

Students will live with carefully screened local families in Alcalá de Henares, the vast majority of whom have had many years of experience hosting BYU students in their home. Although each student will live with a BYU roommate as well, the hosting experience has been designed to maximize students’ exposure to the Spanish language and local culture.

Students must register for 1 credit hour of IAS 201R (Madrid Walks) and 5–6 credit hours from among from the following classes:

SPAN 311R Spanish Conversation 5 (2 credit hours)
SPAN 345 Iberian Civilization (3 credit hours)
SPAN 339 Intro to Spanish Literature (3 credit hours)
SPAN 480R Directed Research in Spanish (3 credit hours)
SPAN 441 Survey of Spanish Literature (3 credit hours)

COST

$5,900–6,200

Includes LDS undergraduate tuition (increased cost for graduate and non-LDS students), instructional materials, housing, meals with host family, laundry, transportation pass to trains, buses, and subway, some hotel and entertainment admissions, excursions, hotels with continental breakfast while away from Alcalá, and international health insurance coverage.

Not included: airfare, meals on excursions, and personal expenses.

PREPARATION

All students who are accepted into the program are required to participate in an international, cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201, 1 credit hour). This evening course will be held during the second block of winter semester 2017.

Part-time and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional $276 tuition fee for enrolling in the prep class.

Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.

FUNDING SOURCES

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application, and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB), will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship and may be considered for other scholarships. They must indicate on their original online application that they want to be considered for financial aid.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

APPLICATION PROCESS

Complete the online application at kennedy.byu.edu/apply
The application requires a $35 fee
Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program
Applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete

He will be joined by his wife Michelle and his children Simon (17) and Eva (14). Course instruction will be provided by native Spanish instructors selected by the Alcalingua program, which is affiliated with the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares.
