How do I declare a major or minor?

Spanish/Portuguese Majors

Set up an appointment with Dr. Greg Stallings, by contacting him at greg_stallings@byu.edu or (801)-422-1273.  Be sure to also pick up a Change of Major form, or print one at the bottom of this page.  After meeting with Dr. Stallings, take the signed Change of Major form to the Liberal Arts Advisement Center in room 1041 JFSB.

Minor/Option II requirement

Note that language major programs require the completion of a minor, or an option II, in the subject of your choice.

What is an option II? Acting similar to a minor, an option II fulfills requirement 8 of the Spanish/Portuguese BA major.  It is 18 credit hours of courses from among the following related fields: a second modern foreign language (upper-division courses only); Latin, Greek, or English beyond the GE requirement; linguistics; classical civilization; Latin American history or geography; humanities; archaeology of Spain or Latin America; comparative literature; pre-medical school requirements; other areas approved by the department chair.  The option II form can also be printed at the bottom of this page.

Capstone requirement

The capstone requirement is fulfilled by completing SPAN/PORT 493 (of requirement 2), generally during a student’s last semester.  In this course, students will assemble a portfolio demonstrating and reflecting on their learning as a Spanish or Portuguese major and their goals for continued language use and improvement.  The portfolio includes previously written essays or other artifacts demonstrating their language ability, cultural competence, critical thinking and expression, and application of their language skills to their personal and professional life.  Save your work throughout the program!  Note that the Language Proficiency Exam scores (taken in SPAN/PORT 491) should also be included in the portfolio.

Spanish Studies/Portuguese Studies 2nd Majors

Set up an appointment with Dr. Greg Stallings, by contacting him at greg_stallings@byu.edu or (801)-422-1273.  Be sure to also pick up a Change of Major form, or print one at the bottom of this page.  After meeting with Dr. Stallings, take the signed Change of Major form to the Liberal Arts Advisement Center in room 1041 JFSB.  Note that your primary Major will also likely require signatures from both the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and the Liberal Arts Advisement Center.
